Feldman’s Cosmos Series
About the Cosmos Series
Throughout his career as a painter, beginning in 1952, Walter Feldman was fascinated with cloud studies, the cosmos and its spiritual inspiration. After graduating from Yale, inspired by his mentors Josef Albers and Wilhelm DeKooning, Feldman evolved an expressionist painting style. In 2013, he concentrated a large continuous body of work looking at clouds and the atmospheric conditions of their movement. Feldman’s color sensibility remained very astute and he manipulated light and dark to create a mystical and foreboding series. Feldman retired from Brown University in 2007 but never ceased his busy art making schedule. In addition to working on a series of paintings in acrylic he began work on a publication from Ziggurat Press that served as a chronology of his art career, Points in Time. The Cosmos Series is a fine example of the artists’ ability to explore his expressionist style. A stickler for using beautiful papers in both his books and art, here he works on handmade paper prepared with gesso before he lays on the acrylic paints. Feldman begins to standardize the scale of his paintings on paper then adheres to masonite resulting in an impressive body of work for an 87 year old artist. These works explore color and forms in his summer studio at Little Compton. Modernist ideas and progressive art thoughts became the fabric of Feldman's daily life. At Yale both Albers and De Kooning were big influences in his work. Based upon his artistic production and exhibition history Feldman evidences early in his career that he is a tireless painter & printmaker…. ambitious to seize a wide spectrum of opportunities.
